Two sessions over Zoom were offered to accommodate parents’ schedules.

  • Monday, September 28, 2026, from 7:00–8:00 p.m.

What is this course and who is it for?

This course is for students who need additional reinforcement in key arithmetic concepts, such as multiplication, division, and fractions, so they can be successful in Math 6, Math 7, and Math 8. It complements the supplemental materials offered for those grade levels, and the instructor will share additional resources during the Parent Information Session.

In this course, students will work at a pace suited to their needs through worksheets and a customized learning path. The goal is to meet students where they are, provide focused practice, and help them build accuracy, confidence, and independence over time. Online videos from other education providers, such as Khan Academy, may be assigned to help explain the key concepts being studied each week. When needed, the instructor will meet with students one-on-one or in small groups to explain concepts further and provide targeted support.

Athletes improve by practicing the fundamentals repeatedly, refining their technique, and building the accuracy and skill needed for more advanced performance. Mathematics works the same way: consistent practice with core ideas gives students a stronger foundation for solving unfamiliar problems and learning new concepts.

When will the course meet and what will it cover?

This course will be offered online most Mondays from 8:00–9:00 p.m. Weeks when school is not in session will be skipped. The instructor may also meet with students during lunchtime on Thursdays at the Edna Brewer campus when in-person support would be helpful.

Sessions will focus on the arithmetic concepts and problem-solving skills that support success in Math 6, Math 7, and Math 8. Students will use worksheets and targeted practice to strengthen prerequisite skills, improve accuracy, and prepare for grade-level work.

The lunchtime Thursday meetings at Edna Brewer will provide an additional opportunity for questions, guided practice, and individualized support. The online and in-person options are intended to complement one another while keeping the course flexible for students and families.

How will the course be structured?

The one-hour session is expected to be divided into two 30-minute sessions. The first session will focus on more basic concepts and guided practice, while the second will address more advanced concepts and applications. Topics will be announced ahead of time, so students are welcome to stay for the full hour or join only the 30-minute session that best suits their needs.

Students will work through a customized path at an appropriate pace, with opportunities to revisit foundational skills and move forward as their confidence and accuracy grow.

Why is this course being offered and who is the instructor?

Jack has been volunteering at Edna Brewer Middle School as a one-on-one tutor for the past few weeks and has observed that some students need significant additional support with basic math skills. This course is designed to help bridge those knowledge gaps so students can build the foundation they need to learn and succeed with the mathematical concepts taught in Math 6, Math 7, and Math 8.

Jack Chung attended OUSD schools from kindergarten through 12th grade and has a strong connection to the Oakland community. Having grown up and attended school in Oakland, Jack is passionate about giving back to the community and helping provide educational opportunities that support the next generation of Oakland students.

How many students will be selected?

For the first month, Jack will aim to work with approximately 20 students so he can provide meaningful individualized support. He will evaluate capacity and determine whether more students can be accommodated later in the year.

Jack will also seek input from teachers and faculty at Edna Brewer Middle School to identify students who may benefit most from this support. Registration will open after the Parent Information Session. Additional information about the registration and selection process will be provided at that time.
