How the levels work

Add

  • Level 1: Single-digit + single-digit problems with sums of 10 or less; 0 and 1 appear occasionally.
  • Level 2: Single-digit + single-digit problems with no sum restriction; about 75% have sums greater than 10. Operands are from 2 to 9, so 0 and 1 are not used.
  • Level 3: Two-digit + single-digit problems; the single-digit operand is from 2 to 9, so 0 and 1 are not used as operands.

Subtract

  • Level 1: Single-digit − single-digit problems with results of 0 or more; 0 and 1 appear occasionally.
  • Level 2: Two-digit − single-digit problems; the single-digit operand is from 2 to 9, so 0 and 1 are not used as operands.
  • Level 3: Two-digit − two-digit problems with results of 2 or more; both operands are at least 2, so 0 and 1 are not used as operands.

Multiply

  • Level 1: Factors from 0 through 5; 0 and 1 appear only occasionally.
  • Level 2: Factors from 2–9; about 75% of problems include a factor from 6–9. Factors 0 and 1 are not used.
  • Level 3: Factors from 2–12; about 50% include a factor from 6–10, 25% include a factor above 10, and the rest use factors from 2–5. Factors 0 and 1 are not used.

Divide

  • Level 1: One- or two-digit dividend ÷ positive one-digit divisor, with a whole-number quotient from 1 to 5. Dividing a number by itself is uncommon.
  • Level 2: Quotients from 1–9; about 75% of problems have an answer from 6–9, while 0 and 1 are uncommon in Levels 2–3. Dividing a number by itself is uncommon.
  • Level 3: Quotients from 1–12; about 50% have an answer from 6–10, 25% have an answer above 10, and the rest use answers from 1–5. Dividing a number by itself is uncommon.
